TURP and HoLEP in plain language

Both procedures treat urinary symptoms caused by an enlarged prostate by removing the obstructing inner tissue through the urethra, with no external cut.

• TURP (transurethral resection of the prostate) is the long-established standard: the surgeon removes prostate tissue in small pieces using an electrical resection loop. It has decades of track record and is available in virtually every urology department.
• HoLEP (holmium laser enucleation of the prostate) uses a laser to peel the obstructing tissue away from the prostate capsule in larger sections, which are then removed. Other laser variants exist (ThuLEP, “greenlight” vaporisation); HoLEP is the one most often discussed for larger prostates.

The right choice depends on prostate size and anatomy, your medications (especially blood thinners), other health conditions, and the equipment and expertise available. Only your treating urologist can make that judgment. Many patients are candidates for either, which is when getting both options priced makes sense.

What TURP and laser prostate surgery cost in India

• The spread is wide because hospitals price the same operation differently across city tiers, brands and room categories. Quotes near the lower end usually reflect non-metro hospitals and shared rooms; the upper end reflects metro international-desk packages with private rooms.
• We have deliberately not printed a separate HoLEP number. Laser enucleation generally carries a premium over TURP, because the laser platform is expensive and the technique is specialised, but published figures vary too much between hospitals for a single honest band. Get it quoted in writing for your case, alongside TURP.
• No number here is an offer. Never pay against a range from any website, including this one. Pay only against an itemized written quote naming you.

What determines where your quote lands

1. Technique. Laser enucleation typically prices above conventional TURP; vaporisation procedures sit differently again.
2. Prostate size and case complexity. Larger glands mean longer operating time and, sometimes, a different recommended technique.
3. City and hospital tier. Metro flagship hospitals quote higher than equally accredited hospitals in cities like Indore, often substantially so for the identical procedure.
4. Room category. The difference between a shared room and a deluxe private room flows through the whole package, not just the room line.
5. Your health profile. Heart conditions, diabetes, anticoagulant use: anything that adds monitoring, ICU observation or cardiology clearance adds cost.
6. Length of stay. Packages price a fixed number of nights; slower catheter weaning or any complication extends the bill beyond the package.

What packages usually include — and exclude

Package quotes in India typically include: the surgery itself, surgeon and anaesthetist fees, operating-theatre charges, the stated number of ward days, routine in-hospital medicines and nursing, and standard post-operative checks before discharge.

They typically exclude: your pre-operative work-up (blood tests, imaging, cardiac clearance), stay beyond the package days, ICU care if needed, blood products, treatment of any complication, take-home medication, and everything outside the hospital (accommodation for your attendant, food, local transport).

Ask every hospital for the inclusion and exclusion list in writing, then compare quotes line by line rather than by the headline number. That is what the itemized-quote standard in our process exists for.

Recovery, and what it means for your travel plan

Recovery specifics belong to your surgeon, but the general shape matters for booking flights:

• Expect a hospital stay of a few days, with a urinary catheter for part of that time.
• After discharge, surgeons usually want patients nearby until urination has settled and they are confident you are fit to fly. Some temporary burning, urgency or blood-tinged urine during early healing is commonly discussed. Your surgeon will tell you what is expected versus what needs review.
• Plan the total India stay generously and keep return tickets flexible. Leaving before your surgeon clears you can cost more than the ticket change it saves.

Questions to ask before you accept any quote

Put these to every hospital, in writing, and keep the answers with your records:

1. Which procedure is being quoted (TURP, HoLEP or another technique), and why that one for my prostate? If you are a candidate for more than one, ask for each to be priced.
2. What exactly does the package include, and what is excluded? Ask for the written list, not a verbal assurance.
3. How many hospital nights are inside the package, and what does each extra night cost for my room category?
4. What happens financially if a complication extends my stay or needs ICU care? You want the per-day and ICU rates in advance, not after.
5. What is the follow-up plan before I fly, and what records will I take home? A complete discharge summary and operative notes are essential for your doctor at home.
6. Who do I contact after I return home if something feels wrong? A serious international desk has an answer to this.

A hospital that answers all six plainly is telling you how it will treat you as a patient. A hospital that will not itemize is telling you something too.
