Medical treatment in India from Rwanda

Kigali is better connected to India than almost anywhere in the region: a nonstop Kigali–Mumbai flight, an online medical visa, English at both ends, and payment rails that work. Rwanda is also bringing more advanced care home every year, so the first question is whether this journey is needed at all. We answer that in writing before anyone books a ticket, and coordinate the rest when travel is the right call.

You always pay the hospital directly. We never hold treatment money. Our fees are published on the Fees page and appear as a separate line item, never inside a hospital bill.

How it works, step by step

    Records first

    You share your diagnosis and what has been advised. We send a secure link for reports and imaging (nothing sensitive goes through the website form) and organize them into a file a specialist can act on. Records from Rwanda typically arrive in English, which keeps this step fast.

    Teleconsult or written second opinion

    Before anyone books a flight, a specialist relevant to your condition reviews your case: a $50 video consultation or a $150 written opinion. Because you pay for it, it answers only to you. Rwanda is bringing more advanced care home every year, and sometimes the honest answer is that travel is not needed. We will say so plainly.

    Your decision

    If treatment in India makes sense, you get itemized quotes from suitable hospitals and a side-by-side comparison for your case. You decide, and there is no obligation to continue.

    e-Medical visa

    Rwandan nationals can generally apply online for India’s e-Medical visa. Confirm current eligibility and validity terms on the official Indian visa portal, as rules change. The High Commission of India in Kigali handles paper cases. We coordinate the hospital invitation letter the application needs and give you a document checklist.

    Travel

    Kigali is unusually well connected for this journey: RwandAir has flown Kigali–Mumbai nonstop for years (the region’s only direct India link), with one-stop alternatives via Nairobi, Addis Ababa or Doha. Our travel arm Tripcuro plans flights around your admission date, airport pickup, and accommodation near the hospital.

    Treatment

    You pay the hospital directly, on the hospital’s own invoice, at the rates locked before you flew. A named coordinator handles the practical side so your family can focus on you.

    Follow-up at home

    Before you fly back you get your complete records, a discharge bill audit against the locked quote, and a follow-up plan your doctor in Rwanda can pick up.

Visa reality

Rwandan nationals are generally eligible for India's e-Medical visa, applied for entirely online, with the High Commission of India in Kigali handling paper cases. Confirm current eligibility and validity terms on the official Indian visa portal before applying; rules change. Companions can apply for linked e-Medical Attendant visas. For Board-referred patients, this is often the part the family still has to arrange themselves. We coordinate the hospital invitation letter your application needs and hand you a checklist; decisions and timelines belong to the Indian authorities, and we will never pretend to influence them.

Flights reality

Rwanda holds the region's strongest card: RwandAir's Kigali–Mumbai nonstop, operating for years and typically running several times a week. The flight is around six and a half hours in the air, with no third-country transit for a patient to manage. Schedules change, so we confirm current frequency when your dates firm up; one-stop alternatives run via Nairobi, Addis Ababa or Doha. Treatment in other Indian cities usually means a short domestic connection from Mumbai. Tripcuro, our sister travel company, handles the bookings, airport pickup and accommodation near your hospital.

How payment works

Two separate payments, never mixed. Treatment costs go from you to the hospital directly, on the hospital's own invoice, at rates we lock in writing before you travel. We never hold or route treatment money. Our facilitation fee is published on the Fees page ($50 teleconsult · $150 written second opinion · $1,000 full journey, milestone-gated), each step credited in full to the next. Paying from Rwanda is comparatively straightforward: forex access is orderly, and card or transfer payment of a USD-quoted fee works for most Kigali families. Every quote, invoice and receipt is written to be shared with whoever is funding the journey, at home or abroad.

We take no commissions from hospitals. Our fees are paid by you, published upfront, and itemized separately from your hospital bill.

What to prepare

  • A passport valid well beyond your travel dates (check the current validity requirement when applying)
  • Your most recent medical reports, imaging and prescriptions (originals where possible)
  • A referral or summary letter from your treating doctor in Rwanda, if you have one
  • A realistic funding plan: who is paying, and how the money reaches the hospital directly
  • Your two or three most important questions for the specialist, written down

Will the Medical Referral Board or RSSB pay for my treatment in India?
For approved cases, the government referral pathway exists: Rwanda’s Medical Referral Board reviews transfers abroad for care unavailable at home, and India has historically been among the main destinations. Be clear about how that channel works, though. The Board names the destination hospital and the scheme settles with hospitals directly, so there is no role in it for a facilitator like us. We take no part in it and no money from it. We help on the patient’s side: an independent written second opinion before or outside the Board process, families who are self-funding, and travel and accommodation for the relatives of a referred patient. Check current rules with the Ministry of Health or RSSB directly.
Are there direct flights from Kigali to India?
Yes, and this is Rwanda’s standout advantage. RwandAir has operated a Kigali–Mumbai nonstop for years, typically several times a week, making it the only direct India link in the region as of mid-2026. Rwanda’s own hospitals are improving fast: should I still travel?
Often you should not, and we will say so when that is the answer. Rwanda has been bringing advanced care home at real pace: radiotherapy has been available in-country since around 2020, and the first kidney transplants were performed in Kigali in recent years, so treatments that once required travel increasingly do not. India still adds something at the complex end: certain cancers, complex cardiac and neurosurgical cases, and treatments not yet established at home. The written second opinion answers whether your case is one of them, against your own reports.
How do I pay from Rwanda?
More smoothly than from much of the region. Forex access in Rwanda is orderly, and international card or transfer payment of a USD-quoted fee is realistic for most Kigali families, with exchange-rate movement the main friction, which is why quotes are in USD with short validity windows. Treatment money always goes from you to the hospital directly, on the hospital’s own invoice. We never hold it. Our own published fee is a separate, smaller payment your whole family can verify.
