Total Knee Replacement Cost in India: 2026 Ballpark Ranges (INR/USD) — and Why Tier-2 Cities Often Run Well Below Metro Prices
Wide, honest 2026 ballpark ranges for total knee replacement in India (INR/USD): what packages include and exclude, and why tier-2 cities cost less.
If a hospital, an agent, or a relative’s contact has quoted you a price for a total knee replacement (TKR) in India, this page exists so you can judge whether that number is plausible. It is not a price list, and we are not a hospital. It is the range within which honest quotes usually land, and a map of what those quotes include and leave out.
We compiled these ranges from hospital-published package rates and from itemized quotes we obtained for real cases; updated July 2026. Your written quote for your case is what matters. These ranges only tell you what is plausible.

The 2026 ballpark ranges
All figures are wide ranges for international self-pay patients at private multispecialty hospitals, converted at roughly ₹86 per US dollar. Hospitals often quote domestic Indian patients lower. Every figure varies with implant choice, comorbidities, room category, and length of stay.

Premium implant lines, robotic-assisted surgery, deluxe rooms, or significant comorbidities can push metro figures beyond the upper ends shown. If a quote falls far below these ranges, that deserves as much scrutiny as one far above them: something is usually missing from it.
What moves a knee replacement quote
Five variables explain most of the spread:
- Implant class. The implant is often the single largest line item. Indian-manufactured implants cost less than imported ones; standard cobalt-chrome designs cost less than premium bearing surfaces marketed for younger patients. A quote that does not name the implant brand and model is incomplete.
- City tier and hospital category. Hospitals in Mumbai or Delhi price the same operation, by similarly qualified surgeons, differently from hospitals in tier-2 cities such as Indore, Jaipur, or Coimbatore. More on this below.
- One knee or two. Same-admission bilateral surgery shares anesthesia and hospital days, so it costs less than double, but it is a larger operation, and suitability is a surgical decision, not a financial one.
- Room category. A higher room class often raises nursing and visit fees along with the nightly rate.
- Your health. Diabetes, heart disease, obesity, or previous knee surgery can add investigations, specialist reviews, ICU observation, and days. Most packages price the uncomplicated case.
What a typical package includes — and what it usually leaves out
Usually included:
- Surgeon, anesthetist, and operating theatre charges
- The implant, of a named class (confirm which)
- A fixed number of room nights (commonly 3–5) in a stated category
- Routine pre-operative workup and standard consumables
- Physiotherapy while admitted
Usually excluded (ask about each one in writing):
- Implant upgrades beyond the named class
- Hospital days beyond the package allowance
- ICU stay beyond a small allowance, and blood products
- Management of comorbidities (diabetes, cardiac clearance issues)
- Post-discharge medicines, braces, and outpatient physiotherapy
- Attendant food and lodging
- Any treatment of complications, re-admission, or revision surgery
The exclusions are where budgets slip. A package that looks ₹1 lakh cheaper can end up costlier once the hospital bills extra days and excluded items at open rates.
Total and partial knee replacement are different quotes
Two operations share the “knee replacement” label. Total knee replacement resurfaces the whole joint and is what the ranges above describe. Partial (unicompartmental) replacement resurfaces only one worn compartment: a smaller operation with a quicker early recovery, suitable only when arthritis is confined to one part of the knee, and generally quoted somewhat below a total replacement. A surgeon decides which one fits you from your X-rays and examination. That is a clinical call, not a menu choice. If two hospitals have quoted you different operations, resolve the clinical question before comparing any prices.
Budgeting beyond the hospital bill
The package covers the admission, not the journey. A realistic budget adds: accommodation near the hospital for the recovery weeks before your surgeon clears a long flight home (guesthouses and mid-range hotels typically run roughly ₹1,500–5,000, about $17–58, per night); flights for you and an attendant; outpatient physiotherapy after discharge, which continues for weeks and rarely sits inside the package; walking aids and medicines. On top of that, set aside a contingency reserve of roughly 15–20% above the package price for excluded items and extra days. Why tier-2 cities often quote well below metro prices
The gap is structural, not a quality verdict. Land, construction, and staffing cost less outside the metros; hospitals there run with lower overheads and lower occupancy pressure; and published industry analyses place tier-2 treatment costs meaningfully below metro levels for comparable procedures. The implant, often the biggest single line, costs about the same everywhere. Many tier-2 hospitals hold the same NABH accreditation as their metro counterparts, and joint replacement is among the procedures most widely performed outside the metros.
That does not make tier-2 automatically right for you. Patients facing a complex revision, or carrying serious comorbidities, may do better at a hospital where a particular sub-specialty team works. For a standard primary knee replacement in a reasonably healthy patient, a tier-2 quote can deliver the same operation at a meaningfully lower price. How to sanity-check any quote you receive
- Is it in writing and itemized? Verbal figures and one-line totals are not quotes.
- Is the implant named by brand, model, and class, with the upgrade price listed?
- How many nights are included, in which room category, and what does an extra night cost?
- What is excluded? Ask for the exclusion list, not only the inclusion list.
- What happens if something goes off-plan (extra ICU, a transfusion, a re-admission)? At what rates?
- Does the total fall inside the ranges above? If not, ask why. There may be a good reason; you deserve to hear it.

Everything above is hospital cost, paid by you directly to the hospital. Medtu Care’s fees are separate, published, and flat: $50 (₹4,300) for a remote consultation, $150 (₹12,900) for a written independent second opinion, and $1,000 (₹86,000) for full journey coordination.
