Total Hip Replacement Cost in India: 2026 Ballpark Guide

Hip replacement draws some of the widest price spreads of any planned operation in India. The same procedure can be quoted at figures that differ by two or three times, mostly because of the implant inside the quote and the city around it. This guide gives conservative 2026 ranges so you can tell a plausible quote from a padded one, and a short list of what to confirm before you book anything.

The 2026 ballpark ranges

Wide ranges for international self-pay patients at private multispecialty hospitals, converted at roughly ₹86 per US dollar. Domestic patients are often quoted lower. Implant class, comorbidities, room category, and length of stay move every figure.

Premium ceramic bearings, revision (repeat) surgery, or significant comorbidities can carry any figure past the upper ends shown. A quote far below these ranges warrants as much questioning as one far above.

What moves a hip replacement quote

• The implant, above all. Hip implants span a wider price band than knee implants: cemented versus uncemented fixation, and bearing surfaces from metal-on-polyethylene up to ceramic-on-ceramic. Imported premium designs cost multiples of standard ones. The choice is clinical (age, bone quality, activity level), but it is also the biggest number in your quote, so it must be named: brand, model, fixation, bearing.
• Primary or revision. First-time replacement is a standardized operation. Revision, which replaces an old implant, is longer, harder, and uses costlier hardware. Hospitals quote it case by case, and it sits above every range on this page.
• One hip or both. Same-admission bilateral surgery shares costs but doubles the physiological load; surgeons decide suitability, and packages price well below double.
• City tier and room category. As with knee replacement, tier-2 city hospitals often quote below metros for a standard primary replacement. That gap reflects their cost structure, not a verdict on quality.
• Your health. Osteoporosis, obesity, diabetes, or cardiac history can add investigations, ICU observation, and days beyond the package.

What a typical package includes — and what it usually leaves out

Usually included:

• Surgeon, anesthetist, and operating theatre charges
• The implant, of a named class (confirm which)
• A fixed number of room nights (commonly 3–5) in a stated category
• Routine pre-operative workup and standard consumables
• Physiotherapy while admitted

Usually excluded, and worth confirming each one in writing:

• Implant upgrades beyond the named class
• Extra hospital days; ICU beyond a small allowance
• Blood products
• Comorbidity management and specialist cross-consultations
• Post-discharge medicines, outpatient physiotherapy, and walking aids
• Attendant food and lodging
• Treatment of complications, re-admission, or revision surgery

Total replacement, partial replacement, and resurfacing are different quotes

Three different operations share the loose label “hip replacement,” and mixing them up makes quote comparison meaningless:

• Total hip replacement (THR). The surgeon replaces both the ball and the socket. The ranges on this page describe this operation, and it is the one most arthritis patients are advised to have.
• Partial replacement (hemiarthroplasty). The surgeon replaces only the ball, most often after certain hip fractures in older patients. It is a smaller operation and generally quoted below a total replacement.
• Hip resurfacing. The surgeon caps the femoral head rather than removing it, an option considered for selected younger, active patients. It uses different implants, and its pricing does not track the THR ranges here.

Budgeting beyond the hospital bill

The package covers the admission, and the journey costs more than that. Plan for accommodation near the hospital through the recovery weeks before your surgeon clears you for a long flight. Guesthouses and mid-range hotels typically run roughly ₹1,500–5,000 (about $17–58) per night. Add flights for the patient and attendant, outpatient physiotherapy after discharge, walking aids, and medicines. A contingency reserve of roughly 15–20% above the package price absorbs excluded items and extra days. Deciding before pricing

Not every painful hip needs replacing this year, and not every candidate needs the premium implant on the quote. A written independent second opinion, from a specialist paid a flat fee with no admission target, answers the questions that come before price: is replacement the right step now, which fixation and bearing suit your age and bones, and is the proposed plan reasonable? How to sanity-check a hip replacement quote

1. Itemized and in writing. A one-line total is not a quote.
2. Implant named. Brand, model, fixation, and bearing surface, with upgrade prices listed.
3. Nights and room category stated, plus the cost of an extra night.
4. The exclusion list in full, not only the inclusions.
5. What-if rates. The cost of an ICU day, a transfusion, a re-admission.
6. Range check. Is the total inside the ranges above? If not, get the reason in writing.
7. Same operation across quotes. Confirm that every quote you compare covers the same procedure, the same implant class, and the same room category, or the comparison tells you nothing.

Where our fees fit — and why they are not in the table above

Everything above is hospital cost, paid by you directly to the hospital.
