Liver Disease Treatment Cost in India: Workup, Procedures and the Ongoing Care People Forget to Budget
Conservative 2026 INR and USD planning ranges for liver care in India: FibroScan and viral load workup, hepatitis antivirals, varices, TACE, resection, monitoring.
If someone has quoted you a figure for liver treatment in India, whether for a workup, a course of antivirals, a tumour procedure, or an operation, this page exists so you can judge whether that number is plausible. It is not a price list, and we are not a hospital. It is the band within which honest quotes usually land, and a map of the parts of liver care that quotes routinely leave out.
We compiled these ranges from hospital-published rates and from itemized quotes we obtained for real cases; updated July 2026. Your written quote for your case is what matters. These ranges only tell you what is plausible.
This article is general information, not medical advice. Every statement about treatment here is subject to the judgment of a registered specialist who has reviewed your case.

Liver care is priced in pieces, not as one package
Unlike a joint replacement, liver disease rarely produces a single package price. A hepatology plan is a workup, then a decision, then either ongoing medication or a procedure, and then monitoring that runs for years. A quote that compresses all of that into one number is usually pricing one stage of it. Ask which stage.
The 2026 planning ranges
All figures are wide bands for international self-pay patients at private Indian hospitals, converted at roughly ₹86 per US dollar. Hospitals price domestic patients and public-sector care differently. Every figure moves with liver function, cirrhosis status, hospital tier and city.
| Item | INR (approx.) | USD (approx.) |
|---|---|---|
| Hepatology consultation and baseline blood panel | ₹3,000 – 12,000 | $35 – 140 |
| FibroScan (transient elastography) | ₹2,000 – 7,000 | $25 – 80 |
| Quantitative viral load (HBV DNA or HCV RNA) | ₹2,500 – 9,000 | $30 – 105 |
| HCV genotype test | ₹4,000 – 12,000 | $45 – 140 |
| Triple-phase CT or MRI of the liver | ₹6,000 – 30,000 | $70 – 350 |
| Liver biopsy where indicated (day care + pathology) | ₹12,000 – 50,000 | $140 – 580 |
| Hepatitis C direct-acting antivirals, 12-week course (medicines only) | ₹8,000 – 45,000 | $95 – 525 |
| Hepatitis B antiviral, per month of medication | ₹300 – 2,500 | $3 – 30 |
| Upper GI endoscopy with variceal band ligation, per session | ₹15,000 – 60,000 | $175 – 700 |
| TACE (chemoembolisation), per session | ₹1.5 – 5 lakh | $1,750 – 5,800 |
| TARE / radioembolisation, per session | ₹6 – 20 lakh | $7,000 – 23,300 |
| Liver resection surgery, inpatient admission | ₹3.5 – 12 lakh | $4,100 – 14,000 |
| Six-monthly surveillance visit (ultrasound, AFP, labs) | ₹3,000 – 10,000 | $35 – 115 |
A quote far below these bands deserves the same scrutiny as one far above. Something is usually missing from it.
What does the diagnostic workup involve?
A liver workup answers two questions before anyone prices treatment: what is damaging the liver, and how much damage is already there. India’s national viral hepatitis guidelines describe a full assessment as clinical evaluation plus bilirubin, albumin, ALT, AST, alkaline phosphatase, prothrombin time and a full blood count, with ultrasound and alpha-fetoprotein for periodic liver-cancer surveillance, and endoscopy for varices, in people with cirrhosis.
Fibrosis staging is where FibroScan comes in: those guidelines read liver stiffness above 8 kPa as significant fibrosis and above 11 kPa as cirrhosis, alongside blood-based scores such as APRI and FIB-4. Because non-invasive tests answer the question in most cases, liver biopsy is used where indicated, not routinely, so treat it as a conditional budget line.
Why hepatitis B and C are a medication budget, not an event
Viral hepatitis is where cost planning most often goes wrong, because patients budget for a procedure that never happens and forget the medication that does. India’s national guidelines state plainly that treatment of hepatitis B is life-long in most cases, and that people with cirrhosis require lifelong antiviral treatment and should not discontinue it. Budget a modest monthly tablet cost, carried for years.
Hepatitis C is the opposite shape: a defined course. The national guidelines set regimen and duration by cirrhosis status and viral genotype: commonly a 12-week direct-acting antiviral course, extending to 24 weeks in some situations, with an HCV RNA test 12 weeks after it finishes to confirm the response. That is why the workup includes a genotype test, and why the drug line and the monitoring line are separate items in any honest quote.
Why do international patients ask about antiviral pricing in India?
The direct-acting antivirals for hepatitis C are manufactured in India as generics rather than imported under originator pricing, which is why a full course sits in the band above rather than an order of magnitude higher. India also runs the National Viral Hepatitis Control Programme, launched to provide free-of-charge screening, diagnosis, treatment and counselling. That programme runs inside the Indian public health system, and it is not a route for international patients treated privately. If anyone implies you can access free national-programme treatment as a visiting patient, walk away; our medical travel scam checklist covers the other signals. Drug prices and programme rules change, so confirm the current position at the point of purchase.
What does endoscopic management of varices cost?
Variceal banding is priced per session, and one session is rarely the whole plan. Portal hypertension from cirrhosis raises pressure in the veins of the oesophagus and stomach; endoscopic band ligation treats them, with follow-up endoscopies scheduled until they are dealt with. Budget per session at the band above, multiplied by the session count your gastroenterologist plans, plus day-care charges, sedation and medicines. Ask for that session count in writing.
What do TACE and TARE cost for liver tumours?
Both are per-session, image-guided procedures for liver tumours, and TARE is substantially the more expensive. TACE (transarterial chemoembolisation) delivers chemotherapy into the tumour’s blood supply and blocks it; TARE (transarterial radioembolisation) delivers radioactive microspheres, most of them imported, which is the main reason for the gap. Neither is priced as a course, so ask how many sessions are anticipated and what the interval imaging costs. Where systemic treatment runs alongside, the chemotherapy cost guide explains per-cycle pricing.
What does liver resection surgery cost?
Liver resection is quoted as an inpatient admission, and the spread is wide because the operations are not comparable. A small peripheral wedge resection and a major hepatectomy carry different theatre times, ICU expectations and lengths of stay. Behind the range: how much liver is removed, open versus laparoscopic approach, your liver’s baseline function, room category and ICU days. A resection quote without a stated ICU allowance and a stated number of nights is incomplete.
We do not quote liver transplant prices
That is deliberate, and it holds without exception. Transplantation in India is governed by the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act, whose stated purpose includes the prevention of commercial dealings in human organs. Under that framework, living donation is restricted to a defined near-relative circle (spouse, son, daughter, father, mother, brother, sister, grandfather, grandmother, grandson, granddaughter); any donor outside it requires authorisation committee approval, and the law provides for greater caution where a foreign national is involved.
A transplant is therefore a legal process before it is a purchasable one. We publish no transplant range, no package and no “starting from” figure, and we decline donor-sourcing requests. We will explain the requirements before you plan travel. Our hepatology page sets out how transplant evaluation is handled and what the law requires. Verify the current position with the treating hospital and the relevant authority for your own case.
What a quote includes — and what it usually leaves out
Usually included: the named procedure, theatre or endoscopy-suite charges, the specialist’s fee, a stated number of nights, and routine consumables.
Usually excluded (ask about each in writing): the workup that preceded the quote; ICU beyond a small allowance; blood products; repeat sessions of banding, TACE or TARE; interval imaging; medicines after discharge; management of decompensation such as ascites or encephalopathy; and any treatment of complications or re-admission.
Budgeting beyond the hospital bill
Liver care keeps costing money long after the hospital bill closes. Add accommodation for the recovery weeks before a surgeon clears a long flight (guesthouses and mid-range hotels commonly run roughly ₹1,500–5,000, about $17–58, per night); flights for you and an attendant; and surveillance. India’s national guidelines recommend six-monthly abdominal ultrasound and alpha-fetoprotein testing for people with cirrhosis, continuing indefinitely, plus endoscopy for varices where they were present before. Price that twice a year, at home rather than in India, for years. That is the number that decides whether a plan is affordable. A contingency reserve of roughly 15–20% above any quoted figure is sensible, and what treatment in India really costs covers the trip-level budget.
How to sanity-check a liver quote
- Which stage is this quote for: the workup, the medication, the procedure, or the admission?
- Is it in writing and itemized, with each investigation listed separately?
- How many sessions of banding, TACE or TARE are anticipated, and at what price each?
- What ICU allowance and how many nights are included, and what does an extra night cost?
- What is excluded? Ask for the exclusion list, not only the inclusion list.
- What does monitoring cost, per year, after this?
- Does the total fall inside the bands above? If not, ask why. There may be a good reason, and you deserve to hear it.
An independent written second opinion before you accept a quote answers the prior question: whether the proposed procedure is the right next step for your liver at all, or whether medication and monitoring come first.
Where our fees fit — and why they are not in the table
Everything above is hospital or pharmacy cost, paid by you directly. Medtu Care’s fees are separate, published and flat: $50 (₹4,300) for a remote consultation, $150 (₹12,900) for a written independent second opinion, and $1,000 (₹86,000) for full journey coordination. The fees page sets out the details. INR equivalents are approximate, at about ₹86 per US dollar. The USD figure is the fee. We take no commissions from hospitals. Our fees are paid by you, published upfront, and itemized separately from your hospital bill. That is why we can tell you when the cheaper plan is the better one.
