Medical treatment in India from Lesotho
For Basotho families, specialist care beyond Lesotho has usually meant South Africa, and for many cases that remains the right answer. India enters the picture for the major planned procedure that must be self-funded: itemized costs that can change what a family can afford, English-speaking hospitals, an online medical visa, and a workable journey via Johannesburg. We add an independent specialist opinion before you commit, quotes you can compare line by line, and one accountable person to reach throughout.
You always pay the hospital directly. We never hold treatment money. Our fees are published on the Fees page and appear as a separate line item, never inside a hospital bill.
Maseru to India, via Johannesburg
A short hop or road trip to Johannesburg, then one stop to India, planned around your admission date.
Who this guide is for
- A specialist procedure has been advised (cancer care, cardiac surgery, kidney care or orthopedics) and you are weighing options beyond Lesotho and the familiar South African route
- A referral to South Africa is on the table, and you want an independent written opinion, or a priced alternative, before the family commits
- Your case falls outside the public referral pathway, and the family is planning to self-fund
- You are working in South Africa or further abroad, arranging treatment for a relative at home
How it works, step by step
- 1
Records first
You share your diagnosis and what has been advised. We send a secure link for reports and imaging (nothing sensitive goes through the website form) and organize them into a file a specialist can act on. Records from Lesotho arrive in English, which keeps this step fast.
- 2
Teleconsult or written second opinion
Before anyone books a flight, a specialist relevant to your condition reviews your case: a $50 video consultation or a $150 written opinion. You pay for it, so it answers only to you. Sometimes the honest answer is that travel is not needed, or that Bloemfontein or Johannesburg next door is the more sensible destination for your case.
- 3
Your decision
If treatment in India makes sense, you get itemized quotes from suitable hospitals and a side-by-side comparison for your case. You decide; there is no obligation to continue.
- 4
e-Medical visa
Basotho nationals can generally apply online for India’s e-Medical visa. Confirm current eligibility and validity terms on the official Indian visa portal, as rules change. We coordinate the hospital invitation letter the application needs and give you a document checklist. Companions can apply for linked e-Medical Attendant visas.
- 5
Travel
The journey runs through Johannesburg: a short Maseru–Johannesburg flight or the familiar road trip, then a one-stop connection to India via Dubai, Doha or Addis Ababa. Allow a long travel day, around 18 to 24 hours door to door. Our travel arm Tripcuro plans it around your admission date, with airport pickup and accommodation near the hospital.
- 6
Treatment
You pay the hospital directly, on the hospital’s own invoice, at the rates locked before you flew. A named coordinator handles the practical side so your family can focus on you.
- 7
Follow-up at home
Before you fly back you get your complete records, a discharge bill audit against the locked quote, and a follow-up plan your doctor in Lesotho can pick up.
Visa reality
Lesotho nationals are generally eligible for India's e-Medical visa, applied for entirely online, with no embassy queue. Confirm current eligibility and validity terms on the official Indian visa portal before applying; rules change. Companions can apply for linked e-Medical Attendant visas. We coordinate the hospital invitation letter your application needs and hand you a checklist; decisions and timelines belong to the Indian authorities, and we will never pretend to influence them.
Flights reality
The route runs through Johannesburg: a short Maseru–Johannesburg flight, or the road trip many families already know, then a one-stop connection to India via Dubai, Doha or Addis Ababa. Allow roughly 18 to 24 hours door to door. Schedules change, so we confirm current options when your dates firm up. Tripcuro, our sister travel company, plans the whole journey (including the Johannesburg leg) with airport pickup and accommodation near your hospital.
How payment works
Two separate payments, never mixed. Treatment costs go from you to the hospital directly, on the hospital's own invoice, at rates we lock in writing before you travel. We never hold or route treatment money. Our facilitation fee is published on the Fees page ($50 teleconsult · $150 written second opinion · $1,000 full journey, milestone-gated), each step credited in full to the next. The loti is pegged to the rand and Lesotho sits inside the Common Monetary Area, so documented medical payments abroad run through your bank against an itemized quote. Confirm the current paperwork with your bank. We take no commissions from hospitals. Our fees are paid by you, published upfront, and itemized separately from your hospital bill.
What to prepare
- A passport valid well beyond your travel dates (check the current validity requirement when applying)
- Your most recent medical reports, imaging and prescriptions (originals where possible)
- A referral or summary letter from your treating doctor in Lesotho, if you have one
- A realistic funding plan: who is paying, and how the money reaches the hospital directly
- Your two or three most important questions for the specialist, written down
