Kenyan families budgeting heart surgery in India usually find half a picture: a hospital’s package number, or a flight price, never the journey in one place. This page assembles the whole picture — every layer, with sources — so you can sanity-check any quote you receive against reality.
How much does the hospital part cost?
Indian hospital bands for open-heart surgery run from roughly ₹4,00,000 to ₹4,25,000 on average in tier-2 cities like Indore, with metro centres ranging higher depending on the case. A tier-2 guide places knee-class procedures in a ₹2,20,000–3,50,000 band, which gives a sense of how Indian pricing tiers work: the procedure and the city set the band, and your case details set the position within it.
| Layer | What it covers | Realistic range |
|---|---|---|
| Hospital (surgery, ICU, stay) | The itemized quote: procedure, devices, room, estimated days | Case-specific — this is the line that matters |
| Pre-travel consult | Teleconsult with the cardiac specialist before you fly | $50 published |
| Visa | e-Medical visa for the patient, attendant visas | Government fees, modest |
| Flights (Nairobi–Indore, patient + attendant) | One IndiGo ticket via Mumbai | Airline pricing — bookable on one PNR |
| Stay after discharge | Recovery days near the hospital before flying | Tier-2 lodging from a few hundred rupees a night |
The honest disclaimer under the table: only the hospital line can be known in advance, and only as an itemized quote for your specific case. Everything else is planning-grade.
What changes the hospital number
Three things move a cardiac quote more than the hospital’s name does: the urgency (elective vs emergency), the devices (stents, valves — named by brand in a proper quote), and comorbidities that lengthen ICU time. Our quote red-flags guide lists what the line items should look like; if a quote arrives as a single package number with no lines, you have found your first problem.
The journey, layer by layer
One ticket from Nairobi. IndiGo flies Nairobi–Mumbai daily and connects onto its own Mumbai–Indore leg, so the trip to central India can sit on a single booking with through-checked bags. Qatar Airways’ Doha routing is the verified alternative. Schedules change; we confirm current routings when you enquire.
The visa file. The e-Medical visa needs the hospital’s invitation letter — which exists only after a hospital has accepted your case — plus your records and application. Sequencing matters: consultation first, then hospital selection, then the letter, then the visa. Our e-Medical visa guide walks the documents.
The stay. Attendant accommodation near Indore’s hospital belt starts around ₹599–1,500 a night, and the city’s living costs are a fraction of metro rates — a real consideration for the 1–2 weeks a cardiac journey typically needs.
Funding: what we can and cannot say
SHA’s overseas-referral rules make most planned Indian cardiac surgery a self-funded journey for Kenyan families — our beyond-the-SHA-cap article covers the detail. Many families blend savings, harambee fundraising and diaspora help; the harambee committee checklist exists for that conversation.
What Medtu Care is paid
The published ladder, same as everyone: a $50 remote consultation with a cardiac specialist, a $150 written second opinion on your reports or a quote you already hold, and $1,000 for full journey coordination — each fee credited in full to the next step. Hospitals pay us nothing; you pay the hospital directly on its own invoice.
