IVF: India vs US vs UK

What one IVF cycle costs in India, the US and the UK, the legal rules that decide who can be treated where, and how multi-cycle planning changes the total.

IVF: India vs US vs UK

IVF is the one journey where cost and law shape the plan as much as the medicine does. It is priced per cycle, each cycle is a bundle whose contents vary by clinic, and every country on this page runs a different legal framework around who can be treated and how. This article compares what one cycle plausibly costs in India, the United States and the United Kingdom, and sets out the legal frame that decides whether treatment in each country is possible for you at all.

The honest starting point: nobody can promise you a baby, from any clinic in any of these countries, and no comparison of prices is a comparison of outcomes. What follows compares cost and process only.

This article is general information, not medical advice, and not a legal opinion. Fertility decisions belong to you and the registered specialists who review your case.

Two cautions on reading the table:

  • The ranges measure different bundles in different countries, and even within a country, clinics differ in what a “cycle” price folds in. Medicines are the swing item everywhere: ask each clinic whether drugs sit inside the number before comparing.
  • None of these figures is an offer. The only real number is an itemized written quote from a licensed or registered clinic naming your protocol.

What does one IVF cycle cost in India?

Our India IVF cost article carries the detail. In summary: Indian patients at private clinics are commonly quoted roughly ₹1,00,000-2,50,000 per base cycle (about $1,200-2,900), usually with medicines billed separately. Packages offered to international patients commonly run about US$2,500-5,000 (roughly ₹2,20,000-4,30,000), and their higher reading is largely because they bundle medicines and ICSI into the cycle figure.

Beyond the clinic: stimulation medicines (the item to check hardest), embryo freezing and storage, later frozen transfers, genetic testing where clinically indicated and legally permitted, and several weeks of accommodation for one or two visits. Budget the trip itself as its own line: flights, accommodation near the clinic for the monitoring window, and time off work — these are real costs and they belong in the per-cycle number you compare.

What does one IVF cycle cost in the United States?

The United States is the most expensive of the three. Published US patient-facing cost-of-care references commonly place a self-pay IVF cycle at roughly $12,000-25,000 including medicines, with add-ons priced separately and multi-cycle journeys scaling the total accordingly. Insurance coverage varies by employer and by state, which is why self-pay figures dominate the published guidance.

Law and access: there is no single federal ART law of the kind India’s ART Act provides. Regulation is state-based and clinic-based, and access rules (including surrogacy law) differ by state. For a foreign patient, the practical question is clinic policy plus state law on your specific configuration, and the practical cost question is self-pay pricing, since insurance rarely applies to visiting patients.

What does one IVF cycle cost in the United Kingdom?

UK patient-facing cost references commonly place a self-pay IVF cycle at roughly £4,000-8,000 including medicines, with published guidance flagging that add-ons (ICSI, embryo freezing, later frozen transfers) price separately. NHS-funded IVF exists, but eligibility is decided locally with widely varying criteria, so NHS funding is generally not a route a visiting patient can rely on.

Law and access: all UK clinics treating with gametes and embryos must be licensed by the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA), and licensed clinics apply access rules case by case. Surrogacy arrangements are legal in the UK but tightly regulated. For a visiting patient, the self-pay private route is the practical one.

If you are visiting from abroad, plan on: your home clinic’s stimulation protocol mapped to the trip dates, investigations from home brought as reports, at least one key visit if your clinic supports remote monitoring (ultrasound and blood tests done at home and sent across, with the clinic’s confirmation before you travel), and a contingency for a second trip if the plan needs one. Book the accommodation stretch generously, and agree the payment schedule in writing before you fly.

Since 2021, assisted reproduction in India is governed by the ART (Regulation) Act 2021, alongside the Surrogacy (Regulation) Act 2021. The points that matter for international patients:

  • Clinics and banks must be registered under the Act. Treatment at a registered clinic is the only route we coordinate.
  • Age limits apply: the Act sets eligibility ages of 21-50 for women and 21-55 for men.
  • Marital-status rules matter for foreign patients. The Act frames eligibility around a “commissioning couple” and contains conditions that restrict access for single women (with limited exceptions) and same-sex couples. Registered clinics assess how the rules apply to a specific foreign couple’s documents and circumstances. Confirm eligibility before you plan anything.
  • Surrogacy is not available to foreign nationals. Commercial surrogacy is banned in India for everyone, and foreign nationals cannot commission surrogacy there. We decline every such request.
  • Sex selection is a criminal offence under the PCPNDT Act. No clinic may disclose or select embryo sex for family balancing or any other non-medical reason, and we decline any request that touches this.

We coordinate own-gamete IVF/ICSI at registered clinics, the treatment the framework permits for eligible couples. For anything at the edges of the framework, our answer is no.

How should I compare IVF costs across countries?

  1. Fix the bundle before the price. Ask each clinic the same written questions: what the cycle price includes, whether medicines sit inside it, what ICSI, freezing, storage and a later frozen transfer cost.
  2. Multiply by a realistic cycle view. Nobody can promise one cycle will be enough, and the per-cycle price only becomes a budget when you plan the journey. Ask each clinic how multi-cycle plans are priced and what carries over if a cycle is cancelled mid-way.
  3. Confirm the legal answer first. In India, eligibility under the ART Act decides whether treatment is possible at all. Confirm that with a registered clinic before comparing prices.
  4. Ignore anyone who talks in promises. Indian law prohibits advertising that promises fertility outcomes, and no honest clinic anywhere will promise a pregnancy.

A written independent second opinion from a specialist with no stake in where you are treated is available before you commit to any country’s plan.

What Medtu Care’s fees are, and what they are not

Our fees are flat, published, and paid by you, never by a hospital: $50 for a remote consultation, $150 for a written independent second opinion, $1,000 for full journey coordination, each credited in full toward the next step. Full details on the fees page. They are separate from and additional to every clinic price on this page, which you pay directly to the clinic. Because no clinic pays us, we have no reason to route you anywhere but the answer your case supports.

Cost is one axis of an IVF decision. The legal frame is another, and for India it decides eligibility before price enters the conversation. If you want your documents read against the ART Act first and a straight answer about whether your situation fits, start there.

Questions this article answers

Why does IVF pricing work differently from surgery pricing?
IVF is priced per cycle, and the cycle is a bundle of monitoring, procedures and medicines whose composition varies by clinic. Nobody can tell you in advance how many cycles your situation will need, so the honest comparison is per-cycle cost plus a realistic view of the full journey, not a single headline figure.
Can foreign couples legally do IVF in India?
Yes, within the frame of the ART (Regulation) Act 2021: treatment happens at registered clinics, age limits apply (21-50 for women, 21-55 for men), and marital-status conditions restrict access for single women and same-sex couples. Registered clinics assess eligibility case by case, so confirm your specific situation before planning travel.
Is surrogacy available in India for foreign patients?
No. Commercial surrogacy is banned in India and foreign nationals cannot commission surrogacy there. This is settled Indian law, not a clinic-level policy. We decline all surrogacy requests from foreign patients, and we coordinate own-gamete IVF and ICSI at registered clinics for eligible couples.
What is the single biggest item to check in any IVF quote, anywhere?
Whether stimulation medicines sit inside the per-cycle price or outside it. Drug costs vary widely by protocol and dose, so a quote that excludes medicines is a fraction of your real spend. Ask each clinic the same question in writing before comparing prices.
Can IVF in India include sex selection for family balancing?
No. Sex selection is a criminal offence under the PCPNDT Act; no clinic may disclose or select embryo sex for any non-medical reason. We decline any request that touches this. There is no country comparison on this axis: the rule is absolute in India.
How should I plan the budget for IVF treatment abroad?
Plan per cycle, then plan for the possibility of more than one cycle, because nobody can promise one will be enough. Add travel, accommodation for one or two stays of a few weeks each, and freezing or storage fees where they apply. Budgeting only for one cycle is the most common financial-planning mistake in fertility travel.
