Heart treatment in India for Mauritian patients

A cardiac diagnosis in Mauritius raises an unusual question, because the island's cardiology is better resourced than most of the region's: the real decision is often not whether treatment exists nearby, but whether the specific procedure advised is the right one, and whether a deeper sub-specialist centre across the Indian Ocean adds something for your particular anatomy. India answers that question well for a defined set of cases — complex coronary work, valve surgery, device procedures — and getting there is easier than from almost anywhere: an online e-Visa, a non-stop Air Mauritius flight to Mumbai of around six hours, and English at every step. The discipline that matters is the same as everywhere: an independent review of the advice before money moves, an itemized quote the whole family can read, and documents your bank can actually process for remittance. This page works through that sequence for a heart case in particular.

We take no commissions from hospitals. Our fees are paid by you, published upfront, and itemized separately from your hospital bill. Full details on the Fees page.

Published fees, same from every country

  • Remote consultation (teleconsult) $50
  • Written independent second opinion $150
  • Full journey coordination $1,000

Every fee is credited in full to the next step: the $50 consultation fee comes off the $150 second opinion, and the $150 second-opinion fee comes off the $1,000 full journey fee. You never pay twice for moving forward.

The records that decide a cardiac case, gathered from home

The file a reviewing cardiologist can act on is specific: a recent ECG, an echocardiogram with its measurements, the angiogram images themselves where a catheterization has been performed at one of the island's cardiac units, and a medicine list carrying exact doses. Everything works in English, which removes a step most corridors cannot skip — but images still outweigh prose, so request the angiogram as a disc or file transfer rather than relying on the typed summary. From that package a specialist can say whether the procedure proposed for you sits within accepted practice for your anatomy, which alternatives deserve consideration, and which questions belong back with your own cardiologist in Mauritius. Where a record is stale or a finding is ambiguous, the review says so directly instead of planning quietly around the gap.

An independent check before the decision is made

Because Mauritius has strong local cardiology, the question is rarely whether treatment exists but whether the advised one fits — and that is a question worth answering before the family commits. A $50 video consultation or a $150 written opinion places your file in front of an Indian cardiologist who is paid by you alone, so the answer owes nothing to any hospital's theatre list: is surgery the right route or would a stent serve, how urgent is it really, and what would each option ask of you afterwards. Both fees are credited in full if you travel with us. Sometimes the finding confirms the advice you received on the island, and you proceed with a document that explains why — which matters when the decision involves a state assistance application, a bank remittance, or relatives funding it together. Sometimes the finding is that the journey adds nothing, and that answer is the cheapest one you will ever receive.

An itemized quote, and a payment path your bank can process

Cardiac pricing has more variable components than most fields: the operation itself, the stent count and type or the valve model, ICU days, perfusion, blood products, and the discharge medicines. Every quote we obtain is itemized by the hospital with each significant component on its own line, priced in USD and locked in writing before you fly — because a single-line package cannot be verified, and cannot be argued with if it drifts. Treatment money goes from you to the hospital directly, on the hospital's own invoice, and never through our accounts. The itemized structure also earns its keep twice at home: it is the document your bank asks for when processing the remittance, and it is the document the medical committee reviews if your family is applying for the state's overseas-treatment assistance. Our facilitation fee is published separately and appears as its own line, never folded into a hospital bill, and every document is written to be shared — with the bank, the Ministry, and the family members funding the journey.

Six hours to Mumbai changes what a family can plan

Air Mauritius flies Mauritius–Mumbai non-stop in around six hours, and that brevity is not a detail — it changes what an attendant can realistically commit to, because a companion can fly home mid-treatment for a family matter and return without dismantling the schedule. Treatment in other Indian cities usually means one onward domestic connection from Mumbai, and the routing is planned around your confirmed admission date rather than the reverse. Mauritian nationals appear on India's e-Visa eligible list, so the application is made online before travel; companions can apply for linked attendant visas, and OCI cardholders need no visa at all. Confirm current terms on the official Indian visa portal when applying, since rules are revised from time to time. We coordinate the hospital invitation letter the application needs, and Tripcuro handles the flights, airport pickup and accommodation near the hospital for everyone travelling.

Conditions we coordinate care for

  • Coronary artery disease (blocked arteries)
  • Heart valve disease (stenosis or regurgitation)
  • Heart rhythm disorders (arrhythmias, atrial fibrillation)
  • Heart failure requiring device or surgical evaluation
  • Congenital heart defects in adults and children

Procedures & services we coordinate

  • Coronary angiography and angioplasty with stenting
  • Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), including minimally invasive approaches where suitable
  • Heart valve repair and replacement, including transcatheter (TAVI/TAVR) evaluation
  • Pacemaker, ICD and CRT device implantation
  • Electrophysiology studies and catheter ablation
  • Pediatric and congenital heart surgery coordination

What to prepare

  • Your most recent ECG and echocardiogram reports, plus the angiogram images on disc or by file transfer where a catheterization was done
  • A full medicine list with doses, naming blood thinners specifically, and any allergies on record
  • A summary letter from your treating cardiologist in Mauritius describing what has been advised
  • Recent blood work where you hold it — kidney markers, blood counts — because it shapes what a surgical team can plan
  • A funding outline: who pays, how the remittance runs, and whether a state overseas-treatment application is part of the picture
  • Your bank's current requirements for international remittance, checked early so the paperwork exists before it is needed
  • The questions your family wants answered before the quote arrives, written down together

Cardiology & Cardiac Surgery from Mauritius: FAQs

Can a cardiologist assess my heart without seeing me in person?
For most coronary and valve questions, largely yes, because the evidence that decides them lives in studies rather than in hands-on findings: the angiogram shows the coronary anatomy, the echocardiogram shows valves and pumping function, and the history supplies the remainder. What a remote review cannot do is stand in for an examination where one is genuinely required, and a specialist who reaches that conclusion will say so plainly rather than speculate. The opinion you receive addresses whether the advised procedure is reasonable for your anatomy, what the alternatives are, and what should be raised again with your own cardiologist in Mauritius. It runs alongside your existing care; it does not replace the doctor who has examined you.
Will the government's overseas-treatment assistance pay for heart surgery in India?
Sometimes, partly, and never automatically. Mauritius offers capped financial assistance for treatment that is not available locally, with eligibility running through a medical committee and a means assessment — so the answer for your case belongs to the Ministry of Health and Wellness, and we will not guess it for you. Confirm your position with them before planning around it, because a cardiac bill typically sits well above assistance caps, and most families we speak to are funding the larger share themselves. That is precisely the situation where itemized quotes and a published fee matter: whoever is funding — the state, the bank, or the family — can read every line. The paperwork the process expects families to arrange themselves is what we coordinate.
I hold an OCI card. Does that change the process?
The visa part disappears: OCI cardholders do not need a visa to travel to India for treatment, so the only medical document required for entry is the ordinary passport and card. Everything else runs the same way — records reviewed first, itemized quotes before commitment, payment made to the hospital directly on its own invoice. The familiarity also works in practical ways: Indian hospitals regularly serve families from Mauritius, English runs through everything, and Hindi, Bhojpuri, Tamil and Telugu are widely spoken alongside it, which smooths conversation with nursing staff and attendants. If you are arranging the journey for a parent on the island, that is common ground too — the coordinating relative often lives abroad, and our documents are written to be shared and acted on from a distance.
Should we aim for Mumbai, or is another Indian city better?
Mumbai is the natural starting point: the non-stop flight lands there, and the city carries deep specialist capacity across cardiac care. But the right hospital is a clinical question before it is a logistics one — the sub-specialty your case needs should pick the city, not the flight timetable. Chennai and Bengaluru sit one short domestic connection away and appear on many Mauritian families' maps for specific procedures. We are hospital-neutral: the file gets shortlisted by the specialists and infrastructure your case requires, itemized quotes come back side by side, and the decision stays with you. The honest answer for some cases is that the island's own cardiac service is the right one, and a written opinion will say that too.
What happens to my cardiac care when I come home to Mauritius?
Your own doctors resume ownership, with documents built for the handover. Before you fly home you receive the complete record, the procedure or operation note, the medication plan with doses, and a follow-up schedule written so a clinician in Mauritius can pick it up and act on it. Cardiac treatment usually continues long after discharge — medicines adjusted across months, reviews that recur — so we ask early in the process who at home will hold that continuity and shape the discharge paperwork around them. A follow-up conversation with the treating team can be arranged across the time difference, and the named coordinator who managed your admission remains reachable after you land. The journey ends at departures; the coordination does not.
