From Cape Verde · Orthopedics & Joint Replacement
Orthopedic surgery in India for Cape Verdean patients
A joint that has stopped doing its job changes how a household runs, and when the surgical fix is not available on the islands, families start comparing destinations. Portugal is the familiar answer; India is worth adding to the comparison for reasons specific to orthopedics: imaging-led reviews that can happen before anyone flies, implant classes with names and prices that can be listed line by line, and costs a self-funding family can read in writing. The journey is the honest cost of the choice, with no direct flights and realistic itineraries running two stops through Lisbon and a European or Gulf hub, so nothing should be booked before an independent specialist has read the X-rays. The e-Medical visa is applied for online, the escudo's euro peg keeps a budget stable between quote and travel, and a relative in Portugal or the United States can settle hospital invoices directly. Here is how the whole sequence works.
We take no commissions from hospitals. Our fees are paid by you, published upfront, and itemized separately from your hospital bill. Full details on the Fees page.
Published fees, same from every country
- Remote consultation (teleconsult) $50
- Written independent second opinion $150
- Full journey coordination $1,000
Every fee is credited in full to the next step: the $50 consultation fee comes off the $150 second opinion, and the $150 second-opinion fee comes off the $1,000 full journey fee. You never pay twice for moving forward.
The X-rays and MRI do most of the talking
Orthopedics is the most visual specialty there is, which is what makes a remote review genuinely useful rather than a formality: an X-ray series of the affected joint, an MRI where ligaments, cartilage or discs are in question, and a CT for complex fractures or planning give a reviewing surgeon most of the picture. Add the referral letter naming what has been advised, notes from any previous operation on the same limb, and your current medicines with blood thinners marked. Imaging needs no translation, records in Portuguese are workable, and we flag early anything written that does need converting. From the file, a specialist can say whether the proposed operation matches the images, whether a conservative path such as physiotherapy deserves a trial first, and what the recovery will demand of your family. A $50 video consultation puts your questions to a surgeon directly; a $150 written opinion leaves a document to weigh with everyone who will help you through the recovery.
Implants decide more of the bill than patients expect
Two hip replacements can carry different invoices for a reason worth understanding before travel: the implant. Cemented against uncemented stems, ceramic against standard heads, fixed-bearing against rotating-platform knees, standard hardware against revision systems, each class has its own price, and a quote compressing all of that into "joint replacement" is hiding the one line your budget cares about. The quotes we obtain name the implant class on a separate priced row, so you can ask the surgeon why that class fits your anatomy and what an alternative would change, clinically and financially. Some of the choice belongs to the operating team, because bone quality and anatomy set the boundaries; some is genuinely a budget conversation, and it is better held in Praia than mid-admission. You pay the hospital directly on its own invoice at rates locked in writing before departure, we never handle treatment money, and our published fee is invoiced separately.
Planning the money from an island economy
The escudo's fixed peg to the euro is the quiet advantage of this corridor: a budget agreed at home in euros holds its shape between quote and travel, so the planning conversation can happen months ahead without fear of the numbers drifting. Itemized orthopedic quotes are concrete enough for a bank, a family committee or a diaspora sponsor to act on, and a relative in Portugal, the United States or elsewhere can settle the hospital invoice directly in their own currency while reading the same documents you do; transfers can then be timed rather than rushed. What we will not do is invent domestic support: we have not yet researched and published Cape Verde's funding schemes or public-programme rails for overseas treatment, so on that question we say plainly that we do not know. If you hold paperwork for an official programme, bring it, and we will help you read your case against its criteria before you plan around it.
Visa, attendant and the two-stop journey
Cabo Verdean nationals can generally apply for India's e-Medical visa entirely online, and up to two companions can typically apply for linked e-Medical Attendant visas; confirm current eligibility and validity on the official Indian visa portal, because rules change and the decision belongs to the Indian authorities. We coordinate the hospital invitation letter the application needs and hand you a checklist covering the rest. The journey is the long part and we will not dress it up: there are no direct flights from the islands to India, and realistic itineraries run two stops, most often Lisbon first, served from Praia, Sal, São Vicente and Boa Vista, then a European or Gulf hub onward, taking a full day or more door to door. After joint surgery an attendant earns their visa many times over, handling walking aids, wound care and medicines during the first weeks. Tripcuro, our travel arm, plans the whole chain around your admission date, with pickup and accommodation near the hospital.
Conditions we coordinate care for
- Advanced osteoarthritis of the knee and hip
- Rheumatoid arthritis with joint damage
- Degenerative spine disease (disc herniation, canal stenosis)
- Ligament and meniscus injuries (ACL, PCL, meniscal tears)
- Shoulder disorders (rotator cuff tears, recurrent dislocation)
- Complex fractures and non-unions
Procedures & services we coordinate
- Total knee replacement, including bilateral and revision surgery
- Total hip replacement and hip resurfacing evaluation
- Arthroscopic ACL reconstruction and meniscus repair
- Spine surgery: microdiscectomy, decompression, fusion
- Shoulder arthroscopy and shoulder replacement
- Post-operative physiotherapy planning for your stay and for home
What to prepare
- X-ray images of the affected joint on disc or as digital files, taken from more than one angle where available
- The MRI report and images if one exists, particularly for spine, hip, knee or shoulder questions
- Notes from any earlier operation on the same limb, including an implant card if hardware is already in place
- Your medicine list with doses, anticoagulants and diabetes medicines marked, plus any allergies
- Up-to-date blood work — full blood count, kidney markers and blood sugar — since surgical clearance is written against results from the past few weeks
- A funding plan in writing naming the payer, the payment route, and the documents a diaspora sponsor will need
- The name and passport details of the companion who would apply as your e-Medical Attendant
