Heart treatment in India for Mozambican patients

For a Mozambican family weighing heart treatment abroad, the honest map has two poles: South Africa, which is closer and simpler to reach, and India, which competes on cost for comparable specialist depth in complex cardiac work. Which pole serves your case is a question of evidence, not of habit — and most of that evidence is already in your file. An ECG, an echocardiogram, the angiogram images where a catheterization has been done, and a medicine list with doses: from those, a reviewing cardiologist can say whether the procedure advised in Maputo or Beira is the right one, and whether the journey adds anything. The route is manageable — the e-Medical visa runs online, and Maputo connects to Mumbai and Delhi with a single stop through Addis Ababa most days or Doha several times a week. What needs the most lead time is not the medicine and not the flight, but the money: getting USD out through a Mozambican bank takes documentation and patience, so this page also covers how the itemized quote becomes the paperwork that unblocks it.

We take no commissions from hospitals. Our fees are paid by you, published upfront, and itemized separately from your hospital bill. Full details on the Fees page.

Published fees, same from every country

  • Remote consultation (teleconsult) $50
  • Written independent second opinion $150
  • Full journey coordination $1,000

Every fee is credited in full to the next step: the $50 consultation fee comes off the $150 second opinion, and the $150 second-opinion fee comes off the $1,000 full journey fee. You never pay twice for moving forward.

What the cardiac file needs, and how Portuguese reports fit in

The documents that decide a heart case are compact: a recent ECG, an echocardiogram report with its measurements, the angiogram images themselves where a catheterization has been performed, and a medicine list carrying exact doses. Where your reports are in Portuguese, we work with you to get the key documents — discharge summaries, imaging reports, the referring letter — into English before the review, and we tell you up front which documents matter most; the scans and X-rays themselves need no translation. From that file a cardiologist can say whether the procedure proposed for you sits within accepted practice for your anatomy, what the alternatives are, and which questions belong back with your own doctor. If a record is too old or a finding is ambiguous, the review names the gap instead of quietly planning around it — because a verdict built on a thin file helps nobody.

The review that weighs India against closer options

Because the real comparison for a Mozambican cardiac patient is usually between South Africa and India, the independent opinion is structured to answer exactly that: a $50 video consultation or a $150 written opinion puts your file before an Indian cardiologist who is paid by you and by no hospital, and asks whether the advised procedure is reasonable, how urgent it is, and whether the depth of sub-specialization in India genuinely adds something for your anatomy. Both fees are credited in full if you go on to travel with us. Sometimes the finding confirms the advice you received at home, and you carry forward a written explanation of why — useful when several relatives are funding together. Sometimes the finding is that a closer option serves you as well, and because we only facilitate treatment in India, we tell you that plainly and step aside. Either way, the verdict exists on paper before a ticket is bought.

Itemized quotes, and the bank conversation to start early

A heart quote carries more variable components than nearly any other: the operation itself, stent count and type or valve model, ICU days, perfusion, blood products, and your discharge medicines. We obtain every quote itemized by the hospital — each significant component on its own line, priced in USD and locked in writing before you fly — because a single-line package cannot be verified by the people funding it or argued with if it drifts. The itemization has a second job specific to this corridor: access to foreign currency through Mozambican banks takes documentation and lead time, and the itemized hospital quote alongside the visa paperwork is what banks typically ask to see — so the document that protects you is also the document that unblocks the transfer. Start the bank conversation weeks before departure, not days. Treatment money goes straight from you to the hospital on the hospital's own invoice and never passes through us; where a relative abroad is paying, they can pay the hospital directly in their own currency, and both payers see the same documents. Our fee is published separately.

One stop through Addis Ababa or Doha, planned around admission

There is no nonstop Maputo–India service, but the one-stop options are dependable: Ethiopian Airlines connects Maputo through Addis Ababa most days of the week, and Qatar Airways connects through Doha several times a week, with onward flights from both hubs to Mumbai and Delhi. Treatment in another Indian city usually means a short domestic connection from either gateway. For a cardiac patient the connection quality matters more than the fare, so the routing is planned around your confirmed admission date with rest built in, rather than squeezed to fit whatever timetable saves a little money. Mozambican nationals are generally eligible for India's e-Medical visa, applied for entirely online, with the High Commission of India in Maputo available for paper cases; companions can apply for linked e-Medical Attendant visas. Confirm current eligibility and validity terms on the official Indian visa portal when you apply, as rules change. We arrange the hospital invitation letter your application requires, and Tripcuro manages the flights, airport pickup and accommodation near your hospital.

What to prepare

  • Your newest ECG and echocardiogram reports, and the angiogram images on disc or by file transfer where a catheterization took place
  • A full medication list carrying exact doses, blood thinners called out by name, and any allergies on record
  • Reports in Portuguese are fine; include the treating doctor's letter describing what has been advised — we will tell you which documents matter most
  • Recent blood results where available — kidney markers, blood counts — since they shape what a surgical team can plan
  • A funding plan naming every contributor, and how each payment reaches the hospital directly
  • An early conversation with your bank about the documents and lead time it needs for a USD transfer
  • Your family's questions to have answered before any quote arrives, put in writing together

Cardiology & Cardiac Surgery from Mozambique: FAQs

Should we go to South Africa instead of India for heart treatment?
Sometimes yes, and we will say so when it is. South Africa is closer and the travel logistics are lighter, which matters for someone with heart disease. India's case is usually cost for comparable specialist care, and depth in complex cardiac work — advanced valve procedures, redo surgery, device therapy. The balance depends on your diagnosis and your budget, which is precisely what the written second opinion and the itemized quotes are for. Because we only facilitate treatment in India, we have no reason to talk you out of a closer option if it serves you better — and if the honest review says so, we tell you plainly and step aside. What we will not do is price a journey you do not need.
Can a cardiologist really judge my heart without examining me?
For most coronary and valve questions, broadly yes, because the decisive evidence sits in studies rather than in hands-on findings: the angiogram shows the coronary anatomy, the echocardiogram shows valves and pumping function, and the history fills in the rest. What a remote review cannot do is replace an examination where one is genuinely needed, and a specialist who reaches that conclusion will say so rather than guess. The opinion addresses whether the advised procedure is reasonable for your anatomy, what the alternatives are, and what should be raised again with your own cardiologist in Mozambique. It runs alongside your existing care; it does not stand in for the doctor who has examined you.
My reports are in Portuguese. Will that slow everything down?
Not materially, because the workflow accounts for it from the first step. Specialists in India review records in English, so we work with you to get the key documents — discharge summaries, imaging reports, pathology, the referring letter — into English before the review, and we tell you up front which documents matter and which can wait. The scans and X-rays themselves need no translation, since images speak the same language everywhere. Consultations can be arranged with interpretation where needed, and every written document we send you is in clear, simple English. What we will not do is let a translation gap distort a staging or urgency decision — which is why the language question is handled first, not discovered in the middle.
How does the money actually leave Mozambique and reach the hospital?
Through a conversation you start early, not one you improvise at the cashier. Treatment is quoted in USD, and it goes from you to the hospital directly, on the hospital's own invoice, at rates locked in writing before you fly — never through our accounts. Access to foreign currency through Mozambican banks takes documentation and lead time, and the itemized hospital quote together with the visa paperwork is what banks typically ask to see, which is why we prepare those documents properly and why we push the bank conversation weeks ahead of departure. Where a relative abroad is funding the treatment, they can pay the hospital directly in their own currency, with both payers seeing the same documents. Our published fee is a separate, smaller payment and never appears inside a hospital bill.
Who manages my heart medicines after I return to Mozambique?
Your own doctors, with paperwork built for the handover. Before you fly home you receive the complete record, the procedure or operation note, the medication plan with doses, and a written follow-up plan expressed so a clinician in Mozambique can pick it up and act on it. Heart treatment normally carries on long after discharge — medications adjusted over months, reviews that repeat — so we ask early who at home will hold that continuity and build the discharge paperwork around them. A follow-up conversation with the team that treated you can be arranged across the time difference, and the named coordinator who ran your admission stays reachable after you land, in English or with your family's help in Portuguese. The journey ends at departures; the coordination does not.
