Heart treatment in India for Eritrean patients

Journeys from Eritrea reward early, patient planning, and a heart operation more than most: paperwork takes time on every side, flights out of Asmara are fewer than from larger hubs, and the money usually involves family on more than one continent. None of that makes India the wrong destination — it makes sequence decisive. An independent cardiologist should read the angiogram and echo before any money moves, the quote should be itemized so a relative abroad and a family at home can verify the same lines, and the visa and travel documents should be started generously rather than hopefully. This page sets out that sequence for a cardiac case: what the reviewing specialist needs, how the opinion and the itemized quote work, how diaspora families typically organize payment, and how the one-stop journey through Dubai or Istanbul is built around a confirmed admission date.

We take no commissions from hospitals. Our fees are paid by you, published upfront, and itemized separately from your hospital bill. Full details on the Fees page.

Published fees, same from every country

  • Remote consultation (teleconsult) $50
  • Written independent second opinion $150
  • Full journey coordination $1,000

Every fee is credited in full to the next step: the $50 consultation fee comes off the $150 second opinion, and the $150 second-opinion fee comes off the $1,000 full journey fee. You never pay twice for moving forward.

The cardiac file from Asmara, and what it can decide

The studies that decide a heart case leave Eritrea intact: an ECG, an echocardiogram with its measurements, and the coronary angiogram images themselves where a catheterization has been performed. Records in Tigrinya or Arabic are workable — we help you get the key documents into English before review and tell you which ones actually matter — but the images outrank any prose, so request the angiogram on disc or by file transfer rather than relying on the typed summary. From that package a reviewing cardiologist can say whether the operation proposed for you sits within accepted practice for your anatomy, what the alternatives are, and which questions should return to your own doctor. Where a document is too old or incomplete to build on, the opinion names the gap rather than planning across it.

A decision the whole family can stand behind

For Eritrean families the medical decision is rarely made by one person: a relative abroad often holds the conversation, receives the documents and helps fund the treatment, while the patient and the household at home carry the day-to-day. A $50 video consultation or a $150 written opinion fits that structure well — everyone named by the family can see the same specialist's reasoning at the same time, wherever they are. The review asks an Indian cardiologist paid only by you whether surgery or a stent is the sensible route, how real the urgency is, and what each path demands afterwards. Sometimes it confirms the plan and steadies the family. Sometimes it finds the journey unnecessary, and that answer, arriving before flights and deposits, is worth more than everything else here.

Payment documents built for two countries

Foreign-currency transfers from within Eritrea take planning under the rules at home, so check current requirements with your own bank early, and in practice the most straightforward route for most families is a relative abroad paying the hospital directly in their own currency. The paperwork we insist on makes that arrangement safe rather than improvised: every quote is itemized by the hospital with each significant component on its own line — the operation, the stent count and type or the valve model, ICU days, perfusion, blood products — priced in US dollars and locked in writing before you fly. Patient and payer see the same documents from different countries, and a mid-stay change is a visible line with a reason, never a silent larger total. Treatment money goes to the hospital on its own invoice; we never hold it, and our fee is published separately.

Fewer flights, so the routing is planned first

Asmara has fewer flight options than larger hubs, which changes the order of operations: the routing is confirmed early rather than last. The typical pattern is one stop — flydubai flies Asmara–Dubai year-round and Turkish Airlines flies to Istanbul, both hubs with onward connections to Mumbai, Delhi and other Indian cities — and schedules change, so Tripcuro checks current frequency before anything else is booked. Eritrean nationals can generally apply online for India's e-Medical visa; confirm current terms on the official Indian visa portal while we coordinate the hospital invitation letter the application needs. Alongside the Indian side, allow unhurried time for your own travel paperwork at home, because the treatment schedule is only as solid as the realistic departure date underneath it. Companions can apply for linked e-Medical Attendant visas.

  • Congenital heart defects in adults and children

Procedures & services we coordinate

  • Coronary angiography and angioplasty with stenting
  • Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), including minimally invasive approaches where suitable
  • Heart valve repair and replacement, including transcatheter (TAVI/TAVR) evaluation
  • Pacemaker, ICD and CRT device implantation
  • Electrophysiology studies and catheter ablation

What to prepare

  • Your latest ECG and echocardiogram, together with the angiogram images on disc or by file transfer where a catheter study has been performed
  • A complete list of medicines and doses, with anticoagulants and blood thinners singled out, plus recorded allergies
  • The referral or summary letter from your treating cardiologist in Eritrea, in Tigrinya, Arabic or English
  • Current blood results — especially kidney function and blood count — which set what a surgical team can plan
  • A passport valid well beyond your travel dates, and generous time allowed for all travel paperwork, Indian and at home
  • A funding plan made early: which relative abroad or household at home pays, and how their money reaches the hospital directly
  • What your family wants answered before the quote arrives, decided together and written down

Cardiology & Cardiac Surgery from Eritrea: FAQs

A relative abroad is organizing everything: can you work with them directly?
Yes, and for Eritrean families this is often the most practical arrangement, not an exception to it. The relative abroad can hold the conversation, receive the quotes, pay our fee and pay the hospital, while the patient at home shares records through the secure link and joins the teleconsult. Everyone the family names sees the same documents at the same time, whatever country they are in, which is precisely what makes a decision of this size safe to share. What we do not do is bypass the patient: the clinical decisions belong with them and their doctors at home, and the paperwork is written so both sides of the family can check every line.
How does the money actually reach the hospital from our family?
Most often through a relative abroad paying the hospital directly in their own currency, because foreign-currency transfers from within Eritrea take planning under the rules at home — check the current requirements with your own bank early. The hospital invoices international patients in US dollars on its own paperwork, at rates locked in writing before you travel, and treatment money always goes to the hospital directly rather than through us. The itemized quote is what keeps the arrangement safe: each component on its own line, visible to the patient at home and the payer abroad alike, so contributions can be checked before they are made and audited after they are paid.
Why start the visa and paperwork so early?
Because every part of this corridor moves on its own schedule and none of them can be hurried from the outside. The e-Medical visa is applied for online, but decisions and timelines belong to the Indian authorities; flights out of Asmara run less frequently than from larger hubs, so the routing is confirmed early rather than assumed; and your own travel paperwork at home takes the time it takes, which no facilitator can compress. Building the timeline generously is not caution for its own sake: the admission date the hospital confirms is only useful if the departure date underneath it is real. We would rather give you a plan that starts early than an optimistic one that collapses.
Can a cardiologist really advise without examining me?
For the decisions that matter most in cardiology, largely yes, because the deciding evidence sits in studies rather than in hands-on findings: the angiogram shows the coronary anatomy, the echocardiogram measures valves and pumping function, and your history fills in the rest. What a remote review will not do is pretend an examination away where one is genuinely needed — if that is the case, the specialist says so plainly and tells you what to raise with your own doctor at home. The written opinion addresses whether the advised procedure is reasonable, which alternatives exist, and what the recovery would actually involve.
Who manages my heart medicines after I return to Eritrea?
Your own doctors, with paperwork designed for the handover. Before you fly home you receive the complete record, the procedure or operation note, the medication plan with doses, and a follow-up schedule written so a clinician in Eritrea can pick it up and continue it. Cardiac treatment usually continues long after discharge — medicines adjusted over months, checks recurring — so we ask early who at home will own that continuity and build the discharge documents around them. A follow-up conversation with the treating team can be arranged across the time difference, and the named coordinator who handled your admission remains reachable afterwards, wherever in the world your family is.
