Orthopedic surgery in India for Eritrean patients

Orthopedic operations are planned, not emergency — and for a family in Eritrea that planning needs to stretch further than most: travel paperwork on two sides, flights out of Asmara that run less often than from larger hubs, and costs usually shared between the household at home and relatives abroad. The advantage to use first is orthopedics' own: the evidence is visual, an X-ray or MRI either supports the proposed operation or it does not, so a remote second opinion here is unusually reliable. India's offer, when the case justifies it, is joint replacement, spine surgery and fracture repair with itemized costs a family can audit, an online e-Medical visa, and a published facilitation fee. This page sets out the sequence: images reviewed independently first, the implant chosen and priced openly second, and a journey built around a recovery measured in weeks.

We take no commissions from hospitals. Our fees are paid by you, published upfront, and itemized separately from your hospital bill. Full details on the Fees page.

Published fees, same from every country

  • Remote consultation (teleconsult) $50
  • Written independent second opinion $150
  • Full journey coordination $1,000

Every fee is credited in full to the next step: the $50 consultation fee comes off the $150 second opinion, and the $150 second-opinion fee comes off the $1,000 full journey fee. You never pay twice for moving forward.

The images lead, and they need no translation

For a joint or spine problem the films are the case, so gather the most recent X-rays and any MRI as image files — disc or secure transfer — rather than photographs of a screen, and add the note from your doctor in Eritrea describing the operation advised. From those, a reviewing orthopedic surgeon can judge whether the proposed procedure matches accepted practice for what the images show, whether a less invasive route deserves discussion, and whether fresh views are needed before a plan can be final. Records in Tigrinya or Arabic are workable, and the images themselves need no translation at all. Where the evidence is too old or the views incomplete, the opinion names precisely which study to repeat and why — information worth having while repeating it is still simple.

The implant, decided in daylight

The variable that separates orthopedic quotes most is the one a package price buries: the hardware. Hip and knee replacements vary by stem fixation and bearing surface, spine surgery by the construct, and every class carries its own price and expectations of durability. A $50 video consultation or a $150 written opinion lets an independent surgeon tell you which class suits your age, bone quality and the activity you want afterwards, so the hospital quote arrives as something you can judge rather than accept on faith. Each quote we obtain arrives itemized by the hospital — the implant named, priced as its own line, in US dollars, locked in writing before you fly. If anything changes mid-stay, the difference shows up as a line you can question, not a total that quietly grew.

Costs shared across continents, documents shared across continents

Orthopedic costs from Eritrea are usually carried by two sides at once: the household at home and a relative abroad, and both need documents they can verify independently. Each quote we obtain is itemized by the hospital — operation, implant line, hospital days, physiotherapy — priced in US dollars and locked in writing before you fly, so every payer sees the same lines wherever they live. Foreign-currency transfers from within Eritrea take planning under the rules at home, so check current requirements with your bank early; in practice a relative abroad paying the hospital directly in their own currency is often the most workable arrangement. Treatment money goes to the hospital on its own invoice and never passes through us; our published fee is milestone-gated, separate, and each step is credited in full to the next.

A journey planned around weeks, not days

Asmara has fewer flight options than larger hubs, so the routing is confirmed early rather than assumed: flydubai flies Asmara–Dubai year-round and Turkish Airlines flies to Istanbul, both with onward connections to Mumbai, Delhi and other Indian cities. Eritrean nationals can generally apply online for India's e-Medical visa; confirm current terms on the official Indian visa portal while we coordinate the hospital invitation letter, and allow unhurried time for your own travel paperwork at home, because an admission date is only as useful as the realistic departure date underneath it. For orthopedic surgery an attendant is practical necessity — someone manages the walking aid, the dressings and a long transit — and companions can apply for linked e-Medical Attendant visas. Tripcuro books the whole chain around your confirmed admission date, and the return leg generously around the recovery the surgical team describes.

What to prepare

  • Your latest X-rays and any MRI, as the image files themselves on disc or by secure transfer
  • The letter from the surgeon or doctor in Eritrea describing what has been advised, in Tigrinya, Arabic or English
  • Every medicine with its dose, blood thinners called out by name, and any allergy or reaction on record
  • Blood results from recent tests where you have them, since anaesthetic and surgical planning depends on them
  • A passport valid well beyond your travel dates, and unhurried time allowed for all the travel paperwork, Indian and at home
  • The person travelling as your attendant, and their passport details for the accompanying visa file
  • A funding plan started early: the household at home or relative abroad who pays, and how the money reaches the hospital directly

Orthopedics & Joint Replacement from Eritrea: FAQs

Can a surgeon really assess my hip or spine from images alone?
For the core question — does the advised operation match what the films show — largely yes, since orthopedic decisions rest on imaging far more than on hands-on findings. X-rays and MRI travel perfectly and need no translation, and the history you provide covers the rest: what hurts, what you can no longer do, what has been tried. Where an examination truly matters, the reviewing surgeon says so and tells you what to take up with your own doctor at home instead of guessing. The written opinion covers whether the procedure is reasonable for your anatomy, which alternatives exist, and what the implant choice involves.
How long should the whole trip take, realistically?
Longer than the flight schedule suggests, and planned that way from the start. The surgical team sets the discharge date based on your operation and recovery, and the return leg is booked with room to move rather than on the earliest possible day. Beyond that, this corridor rewards margin: paperwork on two sides takes the time it takes, flights out of Asmara run less frequently than from larger hubs, and a missed connection costs more when the traveller is walking with a frame. What we can promise is process rather than a number of days: a realistic estimate before any ticket is bought, an itinerary that bends if recovery lengthens, and accommodation near the hospital suited to someone who cannot move quickly.
How do relatives abroad pay, and what do they see?
They pay the hospital directly, on the hospital's own invoice, at the US-dollar rates locked in writing before you travel — never through us — and they see the same documents the family at home sees: the itemized quote with each component on its own line, the audit of the final bill against that locked original, and our published fee invoiced separately. Foreign-currency transfers from within Eritrea take planning under the rules at home, so confirm current requirements with your own bank early. The structure exists so that a decision this size can be shared safely: every contribution checked before it is made and audited after it is paid, from whichever country the payer is in.
What does the rehabilitation handover look like?
Concretely: before you fly home you receive the complete record, the operation note, the medication plan, and a rehabilitation schedule written so a physiotherapist or doctor in Eritrea can pick it up and continue it — what weight-bearing is allowed and when, which exercises come in which weeks, and which warning signs mean the treating team should be contacted. Where the team advises a longer recovery period in India before flying, we extend the accommodation and adjust the return flight rather than compressing the timeline. A follow-up conversation with the surgical team can be arranged across the time difference for questions that surface at home, and the coordinator who ran your admission stays reachable afterwards.
Is there any program at home that funds orthopedic treatment abroad?
We publish country funding rails where we have researched them, and for Eritrea we have not researched a government channel that funds overseas orthopedic surgery — so we will not invent one, and any scheme described to you should be verified with its own administrators, for whom an itemized quote is usually the key document. What the corridor does offer is structure and time: planned orthopedics gives the family room to assemble money across households and from relatives abroad, against costs itemized finely enough that each contributor knows what their share buys. Our part is the independence and the paperwork — opinion first, itemized costs second, travel third — so the family's effort goes into the treatment, not into decoding the bill.
